Current health issues are compounding with the limited movement and continued pain in his left shoulder he has also contracted a terrible infection below the calf area of his right leg. An infection created by a small nik in his leg some 6/7 weeks ago which has developed into Endemic Methicillin Resistance Staph Aureus (EMRSA) - commonly known as Golden Staph. This is requiring daily treatment and possibly needs to be operated on to remove the infection.
He has also had numerous bladder infections and now today has been told after an X-Ray done on Wednesday that it appears he has Heterotopic Ossification (HO) which seemingly is the development of bone in abnormal areas.
In Matt’s case it has been confirmed to be in his hips which is why he cannot bend forward, this is a major problem and something that could be 12 months down the track before he can have an operation to correct…if possible.
A meeting due next week with an Orthopedic Consultant will determine the next stage of development.
Given the current climate of his health situation this is terrible news for Matt and his family as it could mean additional time spent in hospital and more than likely a major operation. Matt had set a goal that he would be home permanently for his daughters 2nd birthday on the 18th October this will be a challenge given the recent news.
Matt said in a recent interview that losing the power of your legs in a spinal injury was the easy part but the other indescribable areas lost to someone with this disability is insurmountable.
Today Matt will have an MRI scan that he has had to arrange and pay for himself due to the long waiting list in the hospital system. This scan will determine what is holding back his left shoulder recovery, which prevents Matt from improving in his rehabilitation and physio.
Matt had a suprise visit from Bree Chisholm who has come back for a short visit from India where she has been having stemcell treatment. Bree took time out from her busy schedule to meet with Matt and Elyse. I was privilaged to be invited to meet Bree and share this visit. Bree is so positive and has given Matt and his family an insight to what is out there.
