Story and some new photos from Elyse Battista - Matt’s wife, on a few days away at Ledge Point WA with members of their family and friends.  This being the first time on “holiday” since the accident.

Some pictures over the holiday season will be uploaded to Gallery in the next few days.

It was very strange to see Matt on a motorbike again and once he was lifted on he was fine and balances quite well.   He only got in trouble when he got bogged at the top of a dune at Lancelin and had to yell for a guy to push him out but he just kept getting bogged, the guy didn’t realise he couldn’t get off and help push.

We went to Gail’s house in Lancelin which is about 15min further north than Ledge Point the following afternoon for our son Jett (4yrs old) to have a ride on his 50cc as you can ride down the end of Gail’s street and the dunes are right there.  Paul (Gail’s son), Steve Mouritz who Matt has raced motocross with since Juniors were staying at Gail’s place with his wife and two little boys so Matt and the boys all took off from for a ride, which was fantastic the fact Matt didn’t have to miss out.

We also went across by boat to the Island from Lancelin the next day and the boys all lifted Matt into the boat and off we went and when we arrived they put him in his chair for a while then he went for his first swim since the accident, this was a huge triumph.

The trip was not without some challenges and Matt was sick for a few days with infections also dissapointed with not being able to join in all the activities with Jett, but he did well under the circumstances and the kids loved it, to see them having a great time was worth it.

Thanks to everyone for love & support,

Elyse xx

Exciting news for Matt is that the Doctors at Xcell-Centre located at the Eduardus Hospital in Cologne Germany have after viewing his X-ray’s and medical information decided he is a good candidate for their Stem Cell treatment.  Off course this treatment does not come without a cost.

Fundraising will be underway in the next weeks to assist Matt and his wife Elyse to travel to Germany in February 2009 (only 6 weeks away) for his first treatment of Stem Cell.  Matt is nervous and excited at the prospect of this treatment also concerned of course as this is the first time traveling such a distance in his current condition.  A journey that is not going to be without its challenges.

The family have been offered support from Stephan Pesch who’s home town Cologne is where the  Treatment Centre is located.  This will be excellent ensuring they have as little stress as possible in getting from A to B.

It is now full steam ahead checking out flights and suitable accommodation.  Should anyone out there be able to offer support in the way of travel deals then please give us a call on:

0418 816 171 or email: battista.trust@bigpond.com

Matt will need to have a stop over and also a few days to rest prior to the treament we expect him to leave all going well between the 9th/11th February with treatment begining 16th February.

The Commissioner for Consumer Protection, has approved the issuing of a licence to Maulla Inc as Trustee for Matt Battista Trust under the provision of the Charitabe Collections Act (1946).

This is great news as we can now go forward with major fundraising activities in 2009.

Sunday 9th November

Matt Battista along with son Jett, dad Nick and Barry of BHS Engineering made the trip to the International Event on Sunday 9th.  This was the first time Matt had been to the track since the incident on 29th June 2008 where he sustained injuries leaving him a paraplegic.

Sunday was a big achievement for Matt especially when he had hoped to be riding at this event.

The weather was fantastic and Club members were excited to see Matt along with the International Riders from Ireland who had previously met up with WA Lap Record Holder Matt Battista on Thursday 6th in Freo for Coffee to say hello and discuss the track, lap times and no doubt glean info from Matt on corner speed, suspension settings etc.

Amongst the spectators on Sunday was Young WA rider #14 Aiden Hopkins 15yrs and Winner of the Chad Peters Junior Road Racing Series.  He was delighted to be able to see Matt and chat before he heads off to Mallala.

Matt has such a following from Jr Motorcycle Racing, MotoX thru to Sr Road Racers.  His knowledge in suspension and parts etc is beyond anyone else and this is what makes him different.

WA Lap Record is still held by Matt Battista 56:69 as of Rd 2 18/05/08.
